Xiyu Lighthouse — also known as Yuwen Island Lighthouse — was built in 1875, during the first year of the Qing dynasty’s Guangxu reign. It is the oldest surviving Western-style lighthouse in Taiwan and marks an important point for maritime navigation on the western edge of the Penghu Archipelago. The octagonal red-brick tower stands about 9 metres tall on black basalt cliffs at Penghu’s westernmost tip, a landmark for countless vessels crossing the Taiwan Strait over more than a century. Managed by the Penghu National Scenic Area, the lighthouse occupies a secluded position — facing open ocean to the west, with waves crashing against basalt cliffs below.

Highlights

The octagonal red-brick tower exemplifies 19th-century Western colonial lighthouse design. Its four windows have withstood over a century of northeast monsoon winds; the proportions of the frames and tower body reflect the precision of the foreign engineers who built it. The surrounding terrain is the black basalt and dark rock characteristic of Penghu. In winter, when northeast monsoon winds drive waves against the cliffs, the landscape becomes dramatic. At sunset, the red brick glows golden, and silhouettes of raptors circling the tower create what many consider an iconic Penghu image. From the high ground near the tower, you can see the Taiwanese mainland to the east on clear days, with Wai-an village and its traditional stone fish traps visible to the north.

Getting There & Nearby

The nearest bus stop is Sanxian Towers (PEN309152), roughly 500 m walk from the lighthouse. Alternatively, alight at Wai-an West (PEN299548) or Wai-an East (PEN299549), a 500 m and 600 m walk respectively. The access road follows the coastline with gradually opening views. Winter winds are strong; proceed with caution.

Nearby attractions cluster in the area. Sanxian Towers, a geological formation of three basalt columns, is the nearest landmark. Wai-an village preserves traditional stone fish traps and historic houses; summer intertidal-zone guided tours are available. Jinding Mountain Cannon Fort is in central Xiyu, about 15 minutes by bicycle or car. Erping Mountain Scenic Area and Neian Beach on Xiyu’s south side are also worth visiting. Parking is available at public lots in Wai-an village, or along Xiyu’s main road about 1 km from the lighthouse.
