Xiaomen Whale Cave sits on the southern shoreline of Xiaomen Village, Xiyu, Penghu — a natural sea cave shaped over centuries of wave erosion. The entrance resembles the open mouth of a whale, giving the site its name and making it one of the better-known geological features in the Penghu Archipelago. Measured from the waterline, the cave opening stands roughly 5 metres high and 8 metres wide, with a depth of about 10 metres. In winter, when the northeast monsoon is at its strongest, powerful waves surge into the cave, sending spray and a roaring wind through the chamber — a sight that draws visitors and photographers from across Taiwan each winter.
What to See
Xiaomen Whale Cave is a clear example of the basalt sea-erosion landforms that characterise the Penghu Archipelago. The cave walls expose dark columnar basalt; sections abraded by centuries of wave action have been worn to smooth, rounded surfaces. Horizontal weathering lines are visible across the ceiling and side walls, a layered record of the rock’s long-term sculpting by sea and wind. In winter, salt spray coats the surrounding rocks in a silvery-white crust, lending the site a stark, elemental character.
At low tide, visitors can walk inside the cave to examine the wall textures up close and observe how tidal movement has shaped the floor. Sunlight filtering through the natural vault overhead creates shifting patterns of light and shadow, making it a good angle for photography. The shallow reef flats and rock pools around the cave entrance support a variety of intertidal life; hermit crabs, sea stars, and sea urchins gather here at high tide, and the surroundings are a worthwhile place to observe intertidal ecology.
Getting There and Nearby Attractions
The nearest bus stop is Jiguang Stop (繼光站), about 800 metres from the cave. Take the Xiyu bus route, alight at Jiguang Stop, and follow the signage on a 10–15 minute walk to the cave. Livestock Research Station Stop is also within 1 km. Self-driving is strongly recommended — the lanes through Xiaomen Village are narrow, buses run only about 3–4 times a day, and it is difficult to time a visit around low tide without your own transport. An informal parking area near the cave accommodates motorcycles and cars at no charge.
Nearby attractions are within easy reach. The ruins of Xiaomen Lighthouse are a 5-minute walk from the cave (the structure is derelict — entry is not advised). Zhuwan Dayigong Temple (a Mazu temple) is within 1 km and can be combined into the same outing. With a full day, the Xiyu Island loop opens up a broader itinerary: head east to Erkan Old Settlement (a cluster of traditional earthen-brick dwellings, about 3 km away) and Yanwan Geological Area (another sea-erosion landscape, about 6 km away), or head north to Nei-an Beach for swimming and sunsets.
